Weekly Island Round-Up - 24 May 2021

Here are 3 things happening in Mauritius this week!

1) Rally in support of Palestine held in Mauritius over the weekend. People attended in vehicles to comply with Covid-19 regulations.

A parade in support of Palestine took place in the streets of Port Louis over the weekend. Thousands attended in vehicles in order to respect health protocols.

2) Gender consultant Trisha Gukhool asks the education system to consider “menstrual leave” for girls who need to miss school due to period pains. Currently, if students miss more than 15 days of school, they are no longer eligible for the State subsidy for exams and will have to pay fees themselves.

“Many girls have to miss school every time because of period pain. They are penalised because beyond 15 days of absence, they are no longer eligible for the State subsidy for exams”, explains Trisha Gukhool, Gender Consultant.

Finding this situation discriminatory against girls, she has asked the education system to consider “Menstrual Leave”.

“I would like this program to be applied in schools as a first step before campaigning for it to integrate the world of work,” she explains.

Trisha also campaigned to abolish the tax on sanitary products in 2017. At the moment, she is also leading a campaign to extend the Paternity Leave from five days to at least 15.

3) Mandatory 14 day quarantine to enter Mauritius extended to 30th June
