Updated: Mar 31, 2021

Here are 3 things happening in Mauritius this week!

1) An investigation is underway after a group of Mauritian men were found to have shared thousands of intimate photos of women and girls, without consent, on the instant messaging app Telegram.

An investigation is underway after a network of Mauritian men were found to have been swapping intimate pictures of women on instant messaging app, Telegram. Some of the pictures were reported to have nudes, and others of under age girls, all shared without consent. No arrests have been made so far and there have been no statements from any authority.

2) Mauritius reports over 200 local cases of Covid-19. After being halted due to lockdown, the vaccination programme has resumed

3) Marine scientist Shaama Sandooyea holds first underwater protest in Saya De Malha bank to raise awareness of the effects of climate change in the Indian Ocean.

Saya de Malha bank is a remote stretch in the Indian Ocean, shared between Mauritius and the Seychelles and it is known for its seagrass. Seagrass is important for absorbing climate-warming carbon dioxide, yet it being lost at a rapid rate due to dredging, rising ocean temperatures, increase in global shipping traffic through the Indian Ocean and other factors

Holding a placard reading ‘Youth Strike for Climate,’ Shaama Sandooyea, an activist and marine scientist, held her breath and hoped the images from her action would help spark more aggressive global action to fight climate change.
