Weekly Island Round-Up - 21st Jun 2021

Updated: Jun 29, 2021

Here are 3 things happening in Mauritius this week!

1) Rodriguans organise a peaceful march to support their families and friends who have been stranded in Mauritius since March due to Covid-19 lockdowns. They claim they have not heard from the authorities on when they can return to Rodrigues.

In March 2021, 443 Rodriguans found themselves stranded in Mauritius as the country went into a lockdown due to an increase in Covid-19 cases. While some have been able to return to Rodrigues, 226 find themselves still stranded in Mauritius, away from families, with no communication from authories.

2) Two men have been arrested and third is being investigated as part of the Telegram scandal. Back in March, a group of Mauritian men were found to have shared thousands of intimate photos of women and girls, without consent, on the instant messaging app Telegram.

Arrests have been made after a network of Mauritian men were found to have been swapping intimate pictures of women on instant messaging app, Telegram, back in March. Some of the pictures were reported to have nudes, and others of under age girls, all shared without consent.

3) 20 year old Prashant Mohesh becomes Mauritius’ first National Geographic Young Explorer. The nature conservationist and organiser of #ZistwarNouLosean initiative will release a documentary in July on how Mauritians can help conserve their environment.
